The stools resembled very much those of dysentery. The patient was restless and sighing in respiration. I took the history, and was told, that shortly after the boy had come back from Jessore, where he stayed a week, he had intermittent fever, which was usually followed by diarrhoea and vomiting. From the above symptoms and the history, I thought it might be a case of a bad type of pernicious malaria and this was confirmed when I found the spleen was much enlarged. Clinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Quinine in Children
Quinine is the best studied drug for treating severe malaria in very young children. Quinine may be administered in pregnancy and, at therapeutic doses, malformations have not been reported. Some strains of quinine from Southeast Asia and South America have become resistant. Quinine is the treatment of choice for the drug-resistant severe Plasmodium falciparum. The antimalarial mechanism of qui...
متن کاملAllopurinol as an additive to quinine in the treatment of acute complicated falciparum malaria.
The emergence of chloroquine resistance, and a world-wide scarcity of quinine, have resulted in a search for newer antimalarial drugs directed against falciparum malaria. Allopurinol causes virtually complete inhibition of purine biosynthesis of malaria parasites, which may prove lethal to the parasites. This study was designed to examine if allopurinol is additive to quinine in the treatment o...

As this place is a hotbed of malaria, I deal with several hundred malaria cases each year, and for the past few months I have been in the habit of giving quinine intravenously, having abandoned the intramuscular route as, in some cases, it resulted in abscesses. Since reading Dr. Vasavada's letter I have given more than a hundred intravenous quinine injections...

The question of treatment in this case was rather a vexed one, when the patient's pregnant condition was considered, but, taking as my guide the example given by Knowles in his work at the Pasteur Institute at Shillong, I did not hesitate to administer quinine intravenously until I had the malaria well under control. The patient was given one 7 grain intravenous injection of quin...
